Credit card scams happen everyday. People have been hurt financially because of scammers steeling credit card numbers and charging it up leaving the victim with a huge charge bill and most of the time they are required to pay.
Usually people don't know exactly when their credit card or number is being stolen. The scammers have slick ways to allow enough time to go by before the victim realizes their credit card or number has been stolen and if the victim does not report their credit card stolen within a reasonable amount of time, the victim is responsible to pay. Many victims don't find out about the fraudulent charges until they receive their bill statement in the mail.

In this scenario a thief makes a switch and by the time the victim realizes their credit card was stolen, the damage was already done.
A man went for a workout at the local gym and placed his belongings in his locker. After his workout he took a shower then went back to his locker and noticed it was not locked. The man simple thought he forgot to lock it so he checked his wallet to make sure nothing was taken. Everything looked in order, got dressed and went about his day.
A few weeks went by and his credit card bill had arrived. He opens it and realizes that there was $14,000 of chargs to his credit card. He calls the credit card company and started yelling at them saying that he did not make the transactions. The customer care personnel verified that there was no mistake with his card having charges then asked him if his card had been stolen. Of course he says no but then he remembered when he did not lock his locker (or thought he did not lock his locker), pulled out his wallet, took a better look at his credit cards and noticed that his credit card was replaced. Obviously a thief switched his credit card with an expired similar credit card from the same bank was in his wallet.
VERDICT: Because he did not report his credit card stolen or missing earlier, he would have to pay the amount owed to them.
HOW MUCH DID HE HAVE TO PAY FOR ITEMS HE DID NOT BUY? $9,000!
The reason why the credit card company never called the man to verify the transactions was because small amounts rarely trigger a warning bell with some credit card companies. The thief knew exactly how to use the stolen card by making small transactions that added up to a big transaction.

Usually the woman would simply place her card back into her purse but this time she actually took a look at the receipt when she stopped talking with her friend who excused herself to use the ladies room. When she looked at her credit card she noticed it was actually not her credit card but another persons credit card. She waved the server over and the server seemed perplexed that it was another persons credit card.
The server apologized and with credit card in hand went back to the counter where the credit card machine was. Of course the woman watched the servers every move.
While the server was walking back to the counter the serve waved the wrong expired card to the counter cashier and the counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real credit card. There were no exchange of words between the server and cashier. The server brings back the credit card and apologies.
